Survival saws are such handy tools for survival, you cannot afford to be without one. A good saw will make most of your wood cutting tasks a breeze.
Survival saws, like many survival tools, come in a wide variety of sizes and designs. While some are better suited for one task than another, most are just all around good saws suitable for any general purpose wood cutting.
Most survival saws have extremely strong, sharp teeth that are designed to cut on both the push stroke and the pull stroke as well, unlike a standard carpenter saw, which only cuts on the push stroke. This makes for very fast, efficient cutting, which will reduce the time and energy spent on your task, and the calories burned performing it, which can be a very important factor in a true survival situation.
Folding survival saws are very popular among backpackers and expedition trekkers because they are extremely lightweight and take up little room in your pack, yet capable of cutting limbs and poles 4 - 5 inches in diameter or larger.
Collapsible bow-type "pack" saws are a very fine choice of saw for cutting small or larger wood. The blades on these are replaceable and versatile, as most are compatible with different blades. You have a choice of a one-way or two-way blade for wood, bone blade, and even a metal hacksaw blade, enabling you to perform all but the largest of tasks.
The better quality cable type saws work surprisingly well and are virtually weightless and take up no room at all. Along the same line as the cable saw is the hand powered chainsaw. These type saws can eat right thru most wood in no time at all when the teeth are sharp. A disadvantage with this type is they are hard to sharpen properly.
Large wood cutting chores are best accomplished with one or two man cross cut saws. These are very expensive, and usually are only a required tool if you are on horseback, especially with a pack string. These are generally 4 to 5 feet long and capable of cutting huge trees and logs across the trail.
